Indonesia landslide: 10 bodies pulled from debris in Mojokerto

Indonesian rescuers have recovered the bodies of 10 victims following a devastating landslide that struck a mountainous road in East Java’s Mojokerto district, local officials confirmed.
The disaster, triggered by heavy rainfall on Thursday, buried vehicles under a cascade of mud, rocks, and trees near the Watu Lumpang resort area on the island of Java.
The landslide engulfed a van carrying seven passengers and a pick-up truck loaded with vegetables and three traders. Rescue teams retrieved the van driver’s body late Thursday night, while the remaining six victims—his wife, three children, and parents—were recovered on Friday alongside the three traders from the truck. Footage released by East Java’s search and rescue agency depicted the aftermath, showing the road blanketed in thick mud, scattered rocks, and uprooted trees, hampering recovery efforts.
The tragedy underscores the vulnerability of Indonesia’s mountainous regions during the seasonal rains, which span from October to April. Torrential downpours frequently trigger flooding and landslides across the archipelago nation of 17,000 islands, where millions reside in hilly areas or near fertile floodplains. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as the rainy season heightens risks for communities in such precarious landscapes. (ILKHA)
