Iran condemns US threats against Venezuela, warns of risk to global peace
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has strongly condemned reported threats by the United States to use force against Venezuela, describing them as a blatant violation of international law, the United Nations Charter, and a serious threat to regional and global peace.
Araghchi made the remarks during a telephone conversation on Sunday with Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil Pinto, during which the two sides discussed bilateral relations as well as recent developments in the Caribbean region, according to an official Iranian statement.
The Iranian foreign minister said that threats of military action against Venezuela, along with measures that undermine maritime security in the Caribbean, constitute a clear breach of fundamental principles of international law. He stressed that such actions represent dangerous unilateral behavior that must be firmly opposed by the international community.
Araghchi expressed Iran’s solidarity with the Venezuelan people and their elected government, emphasizing that all nations have a responsibility to stand against what he described as illegal and coercive policies.
“These measures pose an open threat to peace and stability at both the regional and global levels,” he warned.
Highlighting the strong and longstanding relations between Iran and Venezuela in political, economic and strategic fields, Araghchi reaffirmed the determination of the leaders of both countries to consolidate and expand bilateral cooperation in line with their shared interests.
For his part, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil Pinto thanked Iran for its principled stance and for expressing solidarity with Venezuela in the face of what he described as illegal threats and unjust sanctions imposed by the United States.
Gil emphasized the determination of the Venezuelan government and people to defend national sovereignty and independence, rejecting external pressure and interference in the country’s internal affairs.
The two foreign ministers also underscored the importance of strengthening bilateral and multilateral coordination within international forums, stressing the need for collective efforts to counter unilateralism and to uphold the sovereignty of nations under international law.
The conversation reflects growing diplomatic coordination between Tehran and Caracas amid heightened tensions involving US policies toward Latin America and the broader Global South. (ILKHA)
