Iran reaffirms right to peaceful nuclear program amidst U.S. pressure

As talks over Iran’s nuclear program continue, the Islamic Republic has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding national interests and its sovereign right to peaceful nuclear technology.
The response comes following provocative remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who declared that any future deal with Iran would prohibit uranium enrichment entirely.
Posting on the Truth Social platform, Trump criticized the policies of former President Joe Biden and claimed that under a potential agreement, Iran would not be allowed to enrich uranium. His comments were seen by many observers as a continuation of Washington’s long-standing pressure campaign aimed at undermining Iran’s scientific progress and its right under international law to peaceful nuclear activities.
In contrast to Trump’s aggressive rhetoric, Iran’s approach has been measured and based on diplomacy and national principles. Over the weekend, Iranian Foreign Minister and chief negotiator Abbas Araghchi confirmed that Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al Busaidi had visited Tehran to convey elements of a U.S. proposal. “Iran will respond appropriately based on principles, national interests, and the rights of the Iranian people to the proposal,” Araghchi stated in a message on X (formerly Twitter).
Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei reinforced this position during a press conference on Monday, emphasizing that any decision regarding the nuclear issue would be made with careful consideration of national priorities. “Naturally, any proposal must be carefully reviewed, and the appropriate response must be based on national principles and interests,” Baghaei said.
Tehran has consistently asserted its right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), and views external attempts to deny this right as unjust and politically motivated. Despite years of sanctions and pressure, Iran has remained open to dialogue and constructive negotiations based on mutual respect and international norms.
With five rounds of talks held since April 12 and more expected, Iran continues to engage diplomatically while upholding the dignity and rights of its people in the face of ongoing Western demands. (ILKHA)
