Kuwait reopens airspace after temporary closure amid regional tensions
Kuwait has reopened its airspace and resumed normal flight operations after lifting precautionary restrictions imposed amid heightened regional security tensions.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) announced that air traffic in Kuwaiti airspace had returned to normal following the resolution of the circumstances that prompted the temporary closure.
In a statement, the DGCA said operations at Kuwait International Airport had resumed in accordance with approved flight schedules and that airlines had returned to normal services.
Officials added that developments continue to be monitored around the clock in coordination with local and international authorities to ensure the highest levels of safety and security within the country's airspace.
Earlier on Thursday, Kuwait temporarily closed its airspace and redirected flights as a precautionary measure amid escalating tensions across the region.
At the time, the Kuwaiti Armed Forces General Staff said the country's air defense systems had intercepted hostile aerial targets in order to protect national airspace and critical infrastructure.
The developments came as regional tensions intensified following new US strikes against Iran, which were followed by retaliatory attacks targeting US military installations in the region.
In a statement, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had targeted 18 US military sites across the Middle East, including air bases in Kuwait and Bahrain, in response to the latest US attacks on Iranian territory.
Kuwait condemned what it described as a renewed attack against its territory, warning that such actions represented a dangerous escalation that threatened civilian lives and critical infrastructure. Iranian officials, however, said their operation was directed solely at US military facilities.
The reopening of Kuwaiti airspace is expected to ease disruptions to regional air traffic, although authorities continue to closely monitor the evolving security situation. (ILKHA)
