Macron arrives in Damascus on historic visit, signaling new chapter in French-Syrian relations
French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Damascus on Monday for an official visit to Syria, marking a significant milestone in the evolving relationship between Paris and Damascus.
Upon his arrival at Damascus International Airport, Macron and his accompanying delegation were welcomed by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani. The French leader is accompanied by senior officials, investors, and representatives of major French companies as part of efforts to expand political and economic cooperation between the two countries.
The visit is the first by a French president to Syria since 2008 and comes amid growing international engagement with the country's new leadership following the political transition that saw President Ahmed al-Sharaa assume power after the fall of Bashar al-Assad's government in late 2024. It is also the first visit by a Western European head of state to Syria under the country's new administration.
During his visit, Macron is expected to hold talks with President al-Sharaa at the presidential palace, focusing on bilateral relations, regional security, reconstruction efforts, investment opportunities, and Syria's reintegration into the international community. The two leaders are also scheduled to participate in a roundtable meeting alongside officials from both countries.
In a message posted upon his arrival, Macron reaffirmed France's support for the Syrian people and emphasized Paris' commitment to a sovereign and unified Syria. He stated that France seeks to help open "a new chapter of stability and peace" while supporting the country's reconstruction and long-term recovery.
French officials have indicated that the visit is intended to strengthen diplomatic ties and encourage economic cooperation, with French businesses exploring opportunities to participate in rebuilding Syria's infrastructure after years of conflict. Discussions are also expected to address regional developments, including counterterrorism cooperation and broader Middle East security issues.
The trip follows a period of improving contacts between the two countries, including President al-Sharaa's visit to Paris in 2025. Observers view Macron's arrival in Damascus as a strong signal of Syria's increasing diplomatic re-engagement with Western nations after years of international isolation. (ILKHA)
