A strong 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Aegean Sea near Anafi Island, Greece, early Tuesday morning, according to seismological reports.
The quake was recorded at 7:46 a.m. local time (Europe/Athens GMT +3) and had a very shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles). Due to its shallow depth, the tremor was felt more strongly near the epicenter than a deeper earthquake of similar magnitude would have been.
Seismologists have been closely monitoring the region due to a recent increase in seismic activity. Experts caution that the ongoing tremors could persist for months.
“This is a reality we cannot ignore,” said Professor of Seismology Kostas Papazachos. “The sequences include fluctuations in intensity, making it difficult to predict the next phase.”
The Aegean region is known for its tectonic activity, and residents in nearby coastal areas have been advised to remain vigilant. Authorities have not yet reported any casualties or significant damage resulting from the earthquake.
More updates will follow as seismologists continue their assessments. (ILKHA)
