Magnitude 5.5 earthquake shakes central Iran, felt in major cities

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck central Iran on Friday night, sending tremors across several provinces, including the capital, Tehran.
The seismic event occurred at midnight local time, with its epicenter near the city of Zavareh in Isfahan Province, according to official reports. The quake originated at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, which often amplifies the feeling of shaking on the surface.
The effects of the earthquake were felt by residents in multiple cities. In addition to Isfahan, people in the provinces of Tehran and Qom reported feeling the tremors. Mehr News Agency correspondents specifically noted shaking in the Tehran areas of Damavand, Absard, Kilan, Varamin, and Fasham.
Initial reports from some unofficial sources had mistakenly identified the epicenter as being in Fasham, Tehran Province. This was later corrected by official seismic monitoring authorities, who confirmed the quake's origin in Zavareh.
There have been no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties. Shallow earthquakes in populated areas can cause concern, and authorities are likely assessing the situation in the affected regions. (ILKHA)
