Main suspect in Monaco bombing found dead in Ukraine
The main suspect in last week's bombing in Monaco targeting wealthy Ukrainian-born businessman Vadym Yermolaiev was found dead near Ukraine's capital, Kyiv.
According to Ukrainian media, citing law enforcement sources, 39-year-old Anastasiia Berezovska was found with gunshot wounds late Monday.
Berezovska was the subject of an Interpol Red Notice issued at the request of Monaco authorities on charges of attempted murder, placing an explosive device in a public place and criminal conspiracy. She had been identified as the prime suspect in the bombing that injured Yermolaiev, his partner and their son.
Monaco prosecutors previously said Berezovska fled Monaco on foot into France after the attack before travelling through several European countries, including Italy, and eventually reaching Germany by car.
Two suspects detained
According to Ukrainian authorities, two men have been detained as part of the investigation into Berezovska's killing. One of the suspects is an officer serving in Ukraine's Defence Intelligence Directorate (HUR), while the other is a former law enforcement officer.
Authorities said the HUR officer admitted to killing Berezovska, claiming he had acted on his own initiative without informing his superiors. During searches, investigators also discovered a basement room resembling a torture chamber at the former officer's residence.
Investigation continues
Ukrainian police and prosecutors said they are continuing to investigate both Berezovska's killing and the Monaco bombing in cooperation with Monaco authorities to identify everyone involved.
Yermolaiev obtained Cypriot citizenship in 2019 and was placed under Ukrainian sanctions in 2023 over business activities in Russian-controlled Crimea. Authorities have not indicated whether those sanctions are connected to the Monaco bombing investigation. (ILKHA)
