Palestinian child killed by unexploded Israeli ordnance in Gaza
A Palestinian child was killed and several others injured on Wednesday after remnants of Israel’s military assault on the Gaza Strip detonated in separate incidents, underscoring the continuing lethal dangers faced by civilians amid the rubble left by the war.
Local sources reported that the child was killed when an unexploded object left behind by Israeli forces detonated inside a residential home belonging to the Al-Souri family on Al-Jaouni Street in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. The explosion caused panic in the densely populated area, where many families have returned to damaged homes despite the ongoing risk posed by unexploded munitions.
In a separate incident, several Palestinians were injured when another remnant of Israeli aggression exploded in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood of Gaza City. Witnesses said the blast occurred in a residential area, highlighting the widespread contamination of civilian neighborhoods with unexploded ordnance following months of intense bombardment.
Meanwhile, Nasser Medical Complex in southern Gaza reported the arrival of two injured individuals who were wounded by Israeli gunfire in the Batn Al-Sameen and Qizan Rashwan areas, south of Khan Younis. Medical sources said the injured were receiving treatment amid severe shortages of medical supplies and overstretched hospital capacity.
In a grim parallel development, medical, rescue, and civil defense teams on Wednesday completed the recovery of the bodies of 60 members of the Salem family from beneath the rubble of the Abu Ramadan family home in the Al-Remal neighborhood west of Gaza City. The building had been destroyed by Israeli forces during the genocidal war on the Gaza Strip.
According to the Civil Defense, some of the recovered bodies had decomposed to skeletal remains. The teams also exhumed 17 bodies that had been temporarily buried near the destroyed home during the assault, allowing them to be reburied in accordance with proper burial rites. The recovery operation lasted three consecutive days and was hampered by a lack of heavy machinery, fuel, and basic equipment.
Civil defense officials warned that thousands of unexploded bombs and shells remain scattered across Gaza, posing a persistent threat to civilians, particularly children. They renewed calls for urgent international intervention to clear explosive remnants of war, support rescue operations, and ensure accountability for the destruction inflicted on Gaza’s civilian population.
As families continue to search for loved ones beneath the ruins and attempt to rebuild their lives, deadly explosions from remnants of war remain a daily reality, long after the bombs have fallen. (ILKHA)
