Putin says Russia begins serial production of Oreshnik missile system
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the country has begun serial production of the Oreshnik medium-range missile system, highlighting the progress of Russia’s advanced weapons programs and defense industry modernization.
Speaking at a Kremlin awards ceremony honoring the developers of the Burevestnik nuclear-powered cruise missile and the Poseidon underwater drone, Putin praised the achievements of Russia’s defense sector, saying all plans to strengthen the army and navy with modern weaponry are being fulfilled.
“We have developed and deployed the Oreshnik medium-range missile system and have started its serial production,” Putin said. “Our intercontinental and submarine-launched missiles are now equipped with advanced systems capable of penetrating missile defense shields.”
According to the state-run TASS news agency, the Oreshnik (meaning “hazel” in Russian) represents a new generation of intermediate-range ballistic missiles designed to enhance Russia’s strategic capabilities.
Putin also emphasized that Russia continues to develop other “superweapons,” including the Burevestnik, Poseidon, Avangard, and Sarmat systems.
He claimed that the Burevestnik cruise missile, powered by a compact nuclear reactor, has “unlimited range” and can strike targets with high precision over long distances.
Defense analysts, however, note that independent verification of the Oreshnik’s specifications remains limited. Ukrainian officials have said the missile may be a modernized version of the RS-26 Rubezh system first developed in 2011.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently claimed that Russia could produce up to six Oreshnik missiles per year.
In March 2018, Putin had revealed that Russia was developing a compact nuclear propulsion system for cruise missiles, describing it as a weapon capable of flying at low altitude, following unpredictable trajectories, and carrying a nuclear warhead.
Putin concluded his speech by asserting that Russia “poses no threat to anyone,” stressing that Moscow’s weapons development is aimed at ensuring national security and strategic balance.(ILKHA)
