Romania: Explosion hits thermal power plant in Bucharest
A powerful explosion struck a thermal power facility in Bucharest late on April 21, sparking a major fire that emergency crews worked overnight to bring under control.
According to reports by Romanian outlet HotNews, the blast occurred at the CET Vest thermal power plant in the western part of the city. Witnesses described hearing a loud explosion late Monday evening, followed by visible flames rising from the site.
Authorities from the Department of Emergency Situations confirmed that the fire initially involved two electrical transformers. The situation was complicated by the presence of approximately 30 tons of oil, which fueled the blaze and required specialized firefighting methods. Crews used both water and foam to contain the flames.
As operations continued, rescue teams reported that a total of three transformers had been damaged by the fire. Despite the intensity of the incident, firefighters succeeded in extinguishing the open flames and bringing the situation under partial control.
By the morning of April 21, emergency efforts had been scaled back. Five firefighting units remained at the site to monitor conditions and carry out cooling operations to prevent the fire from reigniting.
No further details were immediately available regarding casualties or the cause of the explosion. Authorities are expected to continue monitoring the situation as investigations proceed. (ILKHA)
