Russia launches new wave of aerial attacks across Ukraine

Russia conducted another large-scale overnight aerial assault on Ukraine, launching waves of missiles and Shahed-type drones at multiple regions across the country, including areas far from the front lines.
Ukrainian authorities reported explosions in several cities, including the capital Kyiv and the northwestern city of Rivne. The assault marks the latest in a series of escalating attacks, coming just three days after Russia carried out one of its most extensive barrages since the start of the full-scale war — firing 452 drones and 45 missiles in a single night on June 6.
Ukrainian officials say the June 6 attack was reportedly in retaliation for Ukraine’s “Operation Spiderweb,” a drone campaign targeting Russian strategic aircraft.
During the June 8–9 overnight assault, air raid alerts were issued across Ukraine as the Air Force warned of inbound ballistic missiles and Iranian-made Shahed drones. Explosions were confirmed in Kyiv, where an office building in the Darnytsia district suffered damage, according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration.
In Rivne, a region that rarely sees aerial attacks due to its distance from the front lines, at least one civilian was injured. Rivne regional Governor Oleksandr Koval confirmed the strike and said emergency services are working to assess the full scope of the damage.
"A very difficult night for Rivne Oblast. Our region suffered a powerful enemy air strike," Koval stated.
Rivne Oblast, which borders Belarus, shares similarities with neighboring Volyn Oblast, which was struck during Russia’s June 6 assault. Both regions have historically been less affected by direct Russian attacks.
In response to the air threats near its borders, Poland’s Operational Command reported scrambling fighter jets overnight as a precautionary measure due to the Russian missile activity in western Ukraine.
Emergency crews remain active in the affected areas, and further assessments are expected as the situation develops. (ILKHA)
