Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, leading a high-level delegation to Syria, announced Russia's commitment to strengthening ties with the country and supporting its reconstruction efforts.
Speaking to RT Arabic, Bogdanov described his meetings with Syria's de facto leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, and other senior officials as "constructive and positive," highlighting the "historic" and "uninterrupted" friendship between the two nations.
During the talks, both countries agreed to enhance cooperation in various sectors including infrastructure, electricity, oil and gas, agriculture, fertilizers, and railways. Bogdanov, who also serves as President Vladimir Putin's special envoy for the Middle East and Africa, emphasized Russia's readiness to maintain comprehensive dialogue on all cooperative aspects and to host Syrian delegations for further discussions.
Addressing concerns regarding Russian military and economic facilities in Tartous and Hmeimim, Bogdanov assured that these remain secure amidst Syria's recent political shifts. He dismissed rumors about changes to the contracts for the Russian-operated Tartous Port as "purely commercial" issues, expressing confidence in amicable resolutions and continued Russian investment in the port.
No official statement from the Syrian side has been released regarding these discussions. This visit by Russian officials is notable as it is the first since the ousting of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. The duration of the delegation's stay in Syria was not specified. (ILKHA)
