Singapore’s ruling party secures decisive victory in general elections

The People’s Action Party (PAP) has clinched a resounding win in Singapore’s general election, securing its 14th consecutive term in power and extending its six-decade grip on the city-state’s government.
Local media reported that the PAP captured 87 of the 97 parliamentary seats, a stronger showing than its previous election, with 65.57% of the popular vote—up from 61.2% in 2020. The victory solidifies the leadership of Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who led the party into an election for the first time since taking office last year.
Wong, a 52-year-old economist and former finance minister, succeeded Lee Hsien Loong, Singapore’s long-serving leader and son of founding father Lee Kuan Yew. Campaigning on a platform of “continuity with renewal,” Wong vowed to uphold Singapore’s stability while adapting to an evolving electorate’s demands.
Despite rising public calls for political diversity and some dissatisfaction, opposition parties failed to gain significant ground. The PAP maintained control over 33 constituencies, often with commanding margins, reinforcing its dominance since Singapore’s independence in 1965.
The increased popular vote share, a key indicator of public support, signals strong backing for Wong as he navigates global economic challenges and shifting trade dynamics. The result is expected to provide the political capital needed to advance his policy agenda in the coming term.
A formal announcement of the election results is anticipated later today. (ILKHA)
