Six family members killed in Iowa shooting spree as suspect dies by suicide
Six family members were fatally shot in a series of attacks across multiple locations in this southeastern Iowa city on Monday, June 1, 2026, before the suspected gunman, identified as 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland, died by suicide as police approached him, authorities said.
Muscatine Police Chief Anthony Kies described the incident as an "act of evil" stemming from a domestic-related dispute. All six victims are believed to be relatives of McFarland.
Officers were dispatched around 12:12 p.m. Monday to a residence at 210 Park Avenue after receiving reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered four people inside with gunshot wounds; all were pronounced dead at the scene. McFarland had already fled the home.
Police quickly located him on the Riverfront Trail near a pedestrian bridge along the Mississippi River. While officers were speaking with him, McFarland inflicted a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Emergency personnel rendered aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
As the investigation expanded, detectives located a fifth victim—an adult male with an apparent gunshot wound—at a residence at 1509 Mill Street. A sixth victim was found dead from a gunshot wound at a business at 808 Grandview Avenue, which online maps identify as a metal workshop.
Updated details from Tuesday, June 2: The Muscatine Community School District confirmed in a statement that members of the affected families include two school employees and two current students. Counselors are available for students and staff as the close-knit community of approximately 23,500 grapples with the loss.
McFarland had a prior criminal record. In 2019, he pleaded guilty to two counts of felony fraudulent practice and was designated a habitual offender, though authorities have not released further specifics on his history.
No names or ages of the victims have been publicly released pending family notifications. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, along with other local and state agencies, is assisting in the ongoing probe. Detectives continue processing crime scenes and interviewing witnesses.
Muscatine Mayor Brad Bark expressed the community's grief on Facebook: "Our hearts are heavy tonight after the tragic shootings that claimed innocent lives."
Authorities have emphasized there is no ongoing threat to the public. Anyone with information is urged to contact Lt. David O’Connor of the Muscatine Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit at (563) 263-9922, ext. 608. Tips can remain anonymous.
