Somalia takes helm of UN Security Council for January 2026
Somalia has officially assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), marking a significant diplomatic milestone and underscoring the country’s growing role on the global stage.
The rotational presidency took effect on 1 January 2026, following Somalia’s election last year as a non-permanent member of the 15-member Security Council. As part of the council’s monthly rotation system, Somalia will guide the body’s agenda and deliberations throughout January.
In a statement issued by the Somali Mission to the United Nations, Somalia reaffirmed its commitment to international peace and cooperation. “We reiterate our commitment to facilitating constructive and inclusive dialogue towards advancing global peace and security,” the mission said as Ambassador Abukar Osman, Somalia’s envoy to the UN, assumed the leadership role for the month.
Somalia’s presidency comes at a time of renewed debate over the structure of the Security Council, particularly regarding representation from Africa. African nations have long called for comprehensive reform of the council, arguing that the current system is unfair to the continent. Despite being home to more than one billion people and a significant number of issues regularly addressed by the UNSC, Africa currently has no permanent seat with veto power.
African states continue to advocate for permanent representation, insisting that meaningful reform is necessary to ensure fairness, legitimacy, and effectiveness in global decision-making on peace and security.
Somalia’s assumption of the presidency is widely seen as a symbolic achievement, reflecting its gradual re-emergence as an active participant in international diplomacy after decades of conflict and political instability. The month-long role provides Somalia with an opportunity to shape discussions, highlight African perspectives, and contribute to efforts aimed at addressing global and regional security challenges.
