Train-bus collision near Mexico City kills 10, injures 55

At least 10 people were killed and 55 others injured in a tragic collision between a freight train and a double-decker bus in Atlacomulco, northwest of Mexico City, local authorities confirmed on Monday.
The bus, operated by Herradura de Plata and carrying 51 passengers, was struck at high speed by the train while attempting to cross a railway intersection. A viral video circulating on social media captured the harrowing moment the bus, moving slowly amid heavy traffic, was hit at its midpoint, splitting the vehicle apart.
Preliminary reports suggest that the bus driver may have attempted to overtake other vehicles at the crossing, potentially contributing to the catastrophic impact. The driver is currently in custody as authorities investigate potential negligence or traffic violations.
The injured, aged 19 to 48, were transported to hospitals across the state, with several in critical condition. As of Tuesday morning, 12 remain in intensive care, while others are being treated for fractures, concussions, and internal injuries. Authorities have not released the identities of the victims pending family notifications.
The Atlacomulco railway crossing has long been considered a safety hazard due to inadequate infrastructure, including malfunctioning barriers and warning signals. Residents and officials are now calling for an urgent review of railway crossing safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The Mexican transport ministry has pledged a thorough investigation, examining both the bus driver’s actions and the condition of the crossing.
This collision is among the deadliest train-bus accidents in Mexico in recent years, reigniting discussions about the safety of road and rail intersections. Emergency services continue to monitor the situation, and authorities are urging witnesses to come forward with information to assist the investigation. (ILKHA)
