Trump urges Ukraine to act quickly as U.S.-led peace efforts intensify
U.S. President Donald Trump on December 18 urged Ukraine to move swiftly in ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at ending Russia’s war, warning that delays could alter Moscow’s position and undermine the chances of reaching an agreement.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump commented on an upcoming meeting scheduled to take place this weekend in Florida, which will focus on the war in Ukraine and possible pathways toward peace.
“Well, they’re getting close to something, but I hope Ukraine moves quickly,” Trump said. He reiterated the point moments later, adding, “I hope Ukraine moves quickly, because Russia is there.”
Trump cautioned that prolonged negotiations could work to Kyiv’s disadvantage, suggesting that Moscow may harden its stance if talks drag on. “Every time they take too much time, then Russia changes their mind,” he said. Nevertheless, he expressed cautious optimism, stating, “There’s a chance we can get this done, maybe soon.”
The remarks come as Ukrainian delegations are expected to travel to the United States on December 19–20 for meetings with American officials to discuss peace initiatives. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the talks will center on a proposed 20-point peace plan, security guarantees for Ukraine, post-war reconstruction, and related implementation documents. Zelensky added that European officials may also take part in the discussions.
The flurry of diplomatic activity reflects a renewed U.S.-led push to broker a negotiated settlement between Kyiv and Moscow. However, significant gaps remain between the two sides on core issues, including territorial control, security arrangements, and the terms of any ceasefire.
As negotiations gain momentum, Trump’s comments underscore Washington’s growing emphasis on urgency, even as the prospects for a comprehensive peace deal remain uncertain. (ILKHA)
