The United Kingdom and Japan have unveiled investment and technology agreements worth a combined £18 billion, deepening cooperation in strategic sectors ranging from semiconductors and renewable energy to defense and finance.

The announcements followed talks in London between British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi ahead of the G7 summit, as both countries seek to strengthen economic resilience and technological competitiveness amid growing geopolitical uncertainty.

According to the UK Prime Minister's Office, the agreements include major investments in infrastructure, financial services and offshore wind energy projects. British officials said the initiatives are expected to support economic growth and create tens of thousands of jobs.

A key component of the package is the establishment of a formal partnership in semiconductor technology, marking the first such arrangement between the two countries. The initiative aims to combine Britain's chip-design expertise with Japan's advanced manufacturing capabilities in an effort to bolster supply-chain security and reduce vulnerabilities in critical industries.

The partnership will involve Japan's Rapidus, a semiconductor company backed by significant government funding, and the UK's National Semiconductor Centre. The cooperation is expected to focus on next-generation chip development and production.

The two sides also reaffirmed their commitment to expanding defense cooperation, including coordination under the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), a trilateral initiative involving the UK, Japan and Italy to develop a next-generation fighter aircraft.

Speaking after the talks, Takaichi said relations between the two countries had reached a level that could be described as "semi-allied," highlighting the increasingly strategic nature of ties between London and Tokyo.

The agreements come as governments worldwide seek to secure access to critical technologies, diversify supply chains and strengthen economic security amid intensifying competition among major global economies.

Some analysts view the growing UK-Japan partnership as part of a broader trend toward closer cooperation among like-minded countries in key technological and defense sectors.
