UK Prime Minister Starmer visits Türkiye to discuss fighter jets deal
United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer has arrived in Ankara for his first official visit to Türkiye since taking office.
The visit, extended at the invitation of President Erdoğan, was confirmed by Türkiye’s Directorate of Communications, with Director Burhanettin Duran stating: “The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, will undertake an official visit to Ankara upon the invitation of our President.”
The talks are set to focus on bolstering bilateral ties, with an emphasis on strategic defense cooperation, regional security, and global issues. Key topics include the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, humanitarian and reconstruction efforts in Gaza, and significant defense procurement agreements.
A highlight of the visit is the anticipated signing of a deal for Türkiye to purchase 40 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets. After prolonged negotiations, this agreement is expected to enhance Türkiye’s air defense capabilities. The jets, previously used by Qatar and Oman, will see the first batch transferred from Qatar, while those from Oman will be modernized by the manufacturer before delivery to the Turkish Air Force. Officials hailed the procurement as a vital step in modernizing and strengthening Türkiye’s aerial forces.
The visit underscores the deepening partnership between Türkiye and the UK, particularly in defense and security. Both NATO allies are expected to reaffirm their commitment to regional stability and collaboration on international challenges, marking a new chapter in diplomatic relations between Ankara and London.
