UN General assembly reaffirms Palestinians’ right to self-determination
The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution reaffirming the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, including their right to establish an independent State of Palestine.
The draft resolution was approved by an overwhelming majority of 164 member states, while eight countries, including the Israeli occupation regime and the United States, voted against it. Nine countries abstained.
Adopted under the agenda item on the right of peoples to self-determination, the resolution reiterates that the Palestinian people have the inalienable right to freely determine their political status and pursue their economic, social, and cultural development.
The text emphasizes the right of all states in the region to live in peace within secure and internationally recognized borders, while once again affirming the Palestinian people’s legitimate right to an independent state.
The General Assembly also called on all UN member states, specialized agencies, and bodies within the UN system to continue providing support and assistance to ensure the realization of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination as soon as possible.
In addition, the resolution stresses the need to respect the territorial unity and integrity of the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, and underlines support for a just, lasting, and comprehensive peace based on international law and relevant UN resolutions.(ILKHA)
