The United Nations has documented that 801 aid trucks managed to enter Gaza on Wednesday, amid a fragile ceasefire.
However, humanitarian organizations are raising alarms over Israel's stringent controls, which they say continue to significantly hamper the delivery of crucial supplies to Gaza's beleaguered population.
The UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) highlighted efforts to maximize aid during the ceasefire, stating: "The UN and its partners seize every opportunity afforded by the ceasefire to scale up the provision of water, food, shelter, health, sanitation, hygiene, clothing, education, and other assistance to the people of Gaza."
Despite these efforts, aid groups have been vocal in their criticism of Israel, pointing to delays and obstructions in relief operations. According to OCHA, the aid trucks were allowed entry "through interactions with the Israeli authorities and the guarantors for the ceasefire deal," but the process remains fraught with challenges. Essential supplies like fuel and medical equipment are still subject to severe restrictions.
The UN agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) has made significant strides in aid distribution, managing to provide food to 1.2 million people in the first two weeks of the ceasefire. Additionally, UNRWA has opened 37 new shelters in northern Gaza, supplying displaced families with tents, blankets, and winter clothing to cope with the harsh conditions.
The ongoing limitations on aid delivery continue to spark international concern about the humanitarian situation in Gaza, with calls for more open access to ensure the survival and well-being of its residents. (ILKHA)
