US and Iran set to sign memorandum of understanding at Swiss resort on Friday
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran is scheduled to be formally signed on Friday, June 19, at the luxurious Bürgenstock resort in central Switzerland, the Swiss Foreign Ministry confirmed Tuesday.
The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) said it has been coordinating closely for several days with the United States, Iran, Pakistan, and Qatar to facilitate the high-level meeting and signing ceremony.
"At this stage, the signing is scheduled for Friday, June 19, at Bürgenstock in the canton of Nidwalden," FDFA spokesperson Pierre-Alain Eltschinger told Anadolu Agency. The scenic mountain resort overlooking Lake Lucerne, which previously hosted a major Ukraine peace summit in 2024, was proposed by Pakistani and Qatari mediators as well as the US and Iranian sides.
Switzerland is serving purely as a facilitator and host, providing the logistical and diplomatic conditions for the event without involvement in the negotiations themselves. The FDFA declined to release further details about the content of the memorandum or the format of the signing ceremony.
The MoU comes after months of indirect talks mediated primarily by Pakistan and Qatar, aimed at ending a conflict that erupted in late February 2026 involving US-Israeli strikes on Iran.
The framework agreement is expected to include the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping without tolls, the lifting of the US naval blockade on Iranian ports, and a 60-day negotiation period on core issues, including Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions relief, and regional de-escalation. It also features performance-based commitments, under which Iran agrees not to pursue nuclear weapons and to implement verifiable steps in exchange for phased sanctions relief and potential access to frozen assets.
President Donald Trump and Iranian officials have described the understanding as a significant step toward ending hostilities, though both sides have emphasized that full implementation will depend on compliance during the follow-up talks. The Bürgenstock location offers enhanced security due to its isolated, easily controllable position. Speculation continues about the level of delegations, with reports suggesting US Vice President JD Vance could lead the American side.
No additional information on the exact procedure or attendees was released by Swiss authorities as of Tuesday afternoon. The signing, if it proceeds as planned, would mark a major diplomatic development in one of the world’s most volatile regions. (ILKHA)
