Venezuela declares seven days of national mourning after deadly earthquakes
Venezuela has declared seven days of national mourning following the devastating earthquakes that struck the country on June 24, claiming the lives of 2,295 people, according to authorities.
Acting President Delcy Rodríguez announced the period of mourning, saying the nation was experiencing "profound sorrow" following the disaster.
"Today, we share the grief of the families who lost their loved ones. Our prayers are with the injured, the missing and all communities affected by this tragedy," Rodríguez said in a statement.
She said the national mourning would take effect at 6:00 p.m. and would serve as a tribute to those who lost their lives, while reaffirming the government's commitment to supporting survivors and communities affected by the disaster.
On June 24, two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 struck Venezuela within about 40 seconds of each other.
The epicentres were located in Yaracuy state, approximately 10 kilometres apart, causing widespread destruction across several parts of the country.
National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez said the death toll from the earthquakes has risen to 2,295, while hundreds of others were injured and thousands displaced by the disaster.
Search-and-rescue operations continue in the worst-hit areas, with emergency teams and international rescue crews working to locate people still believed to be trapped beneath the rubble while delivering humanitarian assistance to affected communities.(ILKHA)
