Death toll rises to 9 in school shooting in Kahramanmaraş, Türkiye
The death toll from a school shooting in Kahramanmaraş has risen to nine, Türkiye’s Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi announced, confirming that most of the victims were students.
Speaking at the scene in the Onikişubat district, Çiftçi said the attack was carried out by a 14-year-old eighth-grade student who brought a firearm from home and opened fire in two classrooms.
“Nine people have lost their lives—eight students and one teacher,” he said, adding that the incident was carried out by a single individual and is not being treated as an act of terrorism.
The minister reported that 13 people were injured in the attack, six of whom are in intensive care, with three in critical condition. The wounded are receiving treatment in hospitals.
Çiftçi extended condolences to the families of the victims and wished a swift recovery to those injured.
Following the attack, Interior Minister Çiftçi, Justice Minister Akın Gürlek, and National Education Minister Yusuf Tekin traveled to Kahramanmaraş to oversee the response and investigation.
He added that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has been kept informed of developments.
Authorities announced that education in Kahramanmaraş has been suspended for two days following the attack. A similar suspension had been implemented in Şanlıurfa a day earlier after a separate incident.
The Interior Ministry has assigned inspectors to investigate the incident, while prosecutors have also been deployed. The Ministry of National Education has launched a comprehensive inquiry.
Officials said further details will be shared as the investigation progresses. (ILKHA)
