Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan attended the opening ceremony of the new terminal building and runway at Ercan Airport in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
In his speech during the inauguration, President Erdogan expressed his happiness at the event and extended congratulations on the 49th anniversary of the Peace Operation, emphasizing the enduring presence of Turkish Cypriots on the island.
Ercan Airport, previously opened to civilian air traffic in 1975, now boasts significant enhancements, including a larger terminal building, expanded parking area, and a 3,100-meter-long runway, allowing it to accommodate wide-body aircraft.
Erdoğan highlighted that the airport, situated on a 7.8 million square meter area, now has the largest passenger capacity on the Cyprus island, capable of serving up to 10 million passengers simultaneously.
The President emphasized that the modernized Ercan Airport would contribute significantly to tourism, economic growth, investment, income, and employment in the region. He praised the efforts of all those involved in the construction works and believed the airport would turn the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus into a prominent brand in the Eastern Mediterranean, promoting stability and prosperity.
Regarding international flights, Erdoğan urged the international community to recognize the legitimate air traffic services offered by Turkish Cypriots in line with International Civil Aviation Organization standards. He called for an end to the unjust and unlawful isolation faced by Turkish Cypriots, advocating for a culture of equality and coexistence on the Cyprus island.
In commemoration of the July 20 Peace and Freedom Day, Erdoğan honored all martyrs and ghazis, with a special mention of Martyr Major Fehmi Ercan, after whom the airport was named.
After his speech, Erdoğan officially inaugurated the new terminal building and runway, marking a milestone in the development of Ercan Airport as a pivotal transportation hub in the region. (ILKHA)
