Erdoğan: Türkiye will remain strong as long as the spirit of July 15 endures
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Wednesday said Türkiye will remain resilient against all internal and external threats as long as the spirit of national unity demonstrated during the failed July 15, 2016, coup attempt endures, pledging that the country's fight against the FETÖ network will continue until the organization no longer poses a threat.
Speaking at the "July 15 on its 10th Anniversary: Our Will, Our Victory" event in Ankara, Erdoğan said the determination displayed by the Turkish people on the night of the failed coup remains the country's strongest safeguard against attempts to undermine its democracy and independence.
The president, accompanied by First Lady Emine Erdoğan, welcomed participants at the commemoration and paid tribute to the victims of the coup attempt, honoring the 253 people who lost their lives while resisting the putsch and expressing gratitude to the 2,737 veterans who were wounded.
Erdoğan described July 15 as one of the defining moments in modern Turkish history, saying citizens from all walks of life united to defend the country's constitutional order.
"The Turkish nation made history on the night of July 15," he said, noting that men and women, young and old alike, stood together to oppose the coup attempt.
He also acknowledged the support shown by Turkish citizens living abroad and by communities across friendly and neighboring regions, saying prayers and messages of solidarity from around the world reinforced Türkiye's resolve during the crisis.
Erdoğan argued that Türkiye continues to occupy a prominent position in regional affairs, saying people across the Middle East, the Balkans, the Caucasus, and Africa continue to look to the country with hope.
"The world watches the Turkish nation today as well," Erdoğan said. "The innocent children of Gaza, the West Bank and Jerusalem, as well as people in Beirut, Damascus, Aleppo, Tripoli and Sarajevo, look to Türkiye with great hope."
He pledged that Türkiye would not allow any attempts to undermine those expectations, stating that the government would continue resisting what he described as efforts to weaken the country through "dirty scenarios."
Turning to the government's campaign against the FETÖ organization, which Ankara holds responsible for orchestrating the 2016 coup attempt, Erdoğan said the death of the group's leader had weakened the organization's morale but warned against complacency.
"Although the terrorist organization FETÖ has lost hope and motivation after the death of its ringleader, we cannot afford to become complacent," he said.
The president stressed that the fight against the organization would continue within the framework of the law until it no longer poses a threat to Türkiye's security.
Erdoğan also said terrorist organizations targeting Türkiye have reached a dead end, asserting that no group or hostile actor could succeed by confronting the country.
Highlighting Türkiye's security capabilities, he said the country possesses the strength necessary to eliminate any threat directed against its sovereignty and national interests.
"I believe that, with Allah's permission, Türkiye will not experience such dark days again as long as the People's Alliance remains strong," Erdoğan said.
Concluding his remarks, the president emphasized that national solidarity remains the country's greatest source of strength.
"No one can stand in Türkiye's way so long as the July 15 spirit and the Yenikapı spirit are alive," Erdoğan said. "No one can put shackles on our people's will so long as they remain vigilant, stand united, and protect their solidarity."
Türkiye marks July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day each year with ceremonies, memorial events, and public programs honoring those who lost their lives and those who were injured while resisting the failed coup attempt in 2016. (ILKHA)
