French students continue protests despite government measures
Mass protests by high school and university students in France over education conditions have continued despite steps announced by the government to address their demands.
Thousands of students have joined demonstrations called by student unions, while six education unions announced a general strike in support of the young protesters.
The protests, which began over deteriorating school conditions and overcrowded classrooms in Saint-Denis, have spread to more than 30 cities, including Paris. Students are demanding reduced academic workloads, smaller class sizes and reforms to the university admission system.
Government announces new measures
The French Education Ministry announced that 3,024 substitute teachers would be assigned to help address staff shortages and that adjustments would be made in the 2027 budget to improve educational conditions.
However, student unions described the measures as insufficient and announced that blockade actions and demonstrations would continue.
According to ministry data, classes have been completely suspended at 130 schools due to the ongoing protests.
Thousands detained during protests
French Justice Ministry figures showed that 6,877 people, 86 per cent of whom were minors, had been detained since the beginning of the demonstrations. Authorities said 21 people were arrested and placed in custody.
More than 1,000 people, including 215 students, were reported injured during clashes and police interventions.
The demonstrations have increased pressure on the French government as authorities seek to contain growing tensions over education policies and public services.(ILKHA)
