Iranian media announces missile strike on US warship near Strait of Hormuz
Iranian media have claimed that a United States warship was struck by two missiles on 4 May 2026 near Jask Island in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to reports published by the Fars News Agency, the vessel was targeted after allegedly ignoring repeated “stop” warnings issued in the area, which Iran says were intended to prevent entry into the strait.
Iranian sources further claimed that the ship retreated from the area following the incident. However, neither the United States Central Command nor other official US authorities have confirmed the alleged strike.
The report comes amid heightened tensions in the region, where the United States has recently announced plans for a new maritime initiative reportedly named “Project Freedom,” aimed at guiding and securing naval movements in the area.
Iran has previously declared the Strait of Hormuz closed to unauthorized passage, warning that any vessels entering without permission could be targeted. In response, US officials have stated that the initiative includes expanded military readiness in the region, with plans involving the deployment of approximately 15,000 troops and more than 100 aircraft.
At this stage, the claims remain unverified and independent confirmation of any attack has not been provided. (ILKHA)
