Sweden to sell Gripen jet fighters to Ukraine
Ukraine is set to receive a total of 32 Gripen fighter jets from Sweden under a military assistance package and a procurement agreement, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced ahead of the NATO Summit in Ankara.
Kristersson said Ukraine had signed a contract to acquire 16 next-generation Gripen E fighter jets, while Sweden would also transfer 16 Gripen C/D aircraft from its existing fleet, bringing the total number of aircraft to 32.
Kristersson described continued support for Ukraine as one of Sweden's highest priorities, saying military assistance remains essential for Kyiv's defense efforts.
He also called on other countries to increase their support, noting that many allies continue to provide assistance but that additional contributions are needed.
Swedish defense company Saab signed a contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) on June 30 for the supply of 16 Gripen E fighter jets to Ukraine.
The order, valued at approximately 24.6 billion Swedish kronor (about $2.54 billion), is expected to be finalized in the third quarter of 2026.
According to Swedish authorities, the Gripen C/D aircraft are scheduled to be delivered in early 2027, while deliveries of the Gripen E fighters are expected between 2029 and 2030.
The announcement comes as NATO members continue efforts to strengthen Ukraine's air capabilities amid the ongoing war with Russia, with several allies expanding military assistance, including advanced aircraft and air defense systems. (ILKHA)
