Turkish presidency rejects European Parliament report as biased and detached from reality
Türkiye has strongly criticized the European Parliament's latest report on the country, describing it as politically motivated, biased, and disconnected from the realities on the ground.
Turkish Presidency Head of Communications Burhanettin Duran rejected the report's assessments, arguing that it was prepared on the basis of ideological prejudices and distorted information rather than objective analysis.
"We strongly reject the European Parliament’s report, which was prepared on the basis of ideological approaches and distorted information and fails to reflect the realities of Türkiye," Duran said.
Duran particularly objected to the report's references to the Blue Homeland doctrine, its support for what Ankara considers Greece's maximalist claims in the Eastern Mediterranean, and its approach to the Cyprus issue.
According to Duran, these elements demonstrate the extent of the report's bias and undermine its credibility as an objective assessment of Türkiye-EU relations.
"The unfounded and inequitable assessments regarding the Blue Homeland doctrine, the support extended to Greece’s maximalist claims, and the partisan stance adopted on the Cyprus issue clearly demonstrate the extent to which the report is biased," he stated.
He further argued that the report provides a platform for narratives promoted by terrorist organizations and anti-Türkiye groups, which he said contributes to division rather than constructive engagement.
"It is evident that this approach, which provides space for the narratives of terrorist organisations and anti-Türkiye circles, serves division rather than constructive dialogue," Duran added.
The Turkish communications chief also rejected criticism directed at Türkiye's judiciary and comments concerning Justice Minister Akın Gürlek.
Duran emphasized that judicial proceedings in Türkiye are conducted independently and in accordance with the principles of the rule of law.
"We do not accept the unfounded allegations directed at the independent Turkish judiciary, nor the politically motivated assessments targeting our Minister of Justice, Akın Gürlek," he said.
"The Republic of Türkiye conducts its judicial processes through its own institutions in full accordance with the principles of the rule of law."
Duran concluded by urging European institutions and political actors to adopt a more balanced and constructive approach toward Türkiye-EU relations, particularly at a time when cooperation on regional security, migration, energy, and economic issues remains increasingly important.
He called on those seeking to strengthen relations between Türkiye and the European Union to base their assessments on facts, fairness, and mutual interests rather than political considerations.
"Those circles that are expected to contribute to the advancement of Türkiye–EU relations on the basis of mutual interests would be well advised to adopt a constructive approach grounded in facts rather than prejudice, and in fairness rather than political motives," Duran said.
The remarks come amid renewed debate over the future of Türkiye-EU relations, with Ankara continuing to emphasize the importance of mutual respect, sovereign equality, and constructive dialogue in its engagement with European institutions. (ILKHA)
