Türkiye records 6,035 road traffic deaths in 2025, official data shows
Türkiye recorded a total of 6,035 deaths and 403,937 injuries in road traffic accidents in 2025, according to data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute.
The “Road Traffic Accident Statistics, 2025” report stated that a total of 1,549,574 traffic accidents occurred across the country during the year. Of these, 1,261,253 were material damage-only incidents, while 288,321 were classified as fatal or injury-related crashes.
Authorities noted that 86.5% of fatal and injury-related accidents occurred within residential areas, while 13.5% took place outside settlements.
Average daily fatalities
The report showed that in 2025, an average of 789.9 fatal or injury-related accidents occurred daily. On average, 16.5 people lost their lives each day, while 1,106.7 people were injured.
Of the total fatalities in such accidents, 2,541 people died at the scene, while 3,494 people died within 30 days of being transferred to hospitals.
Trends in fatalities and vehicle growth
Compared to the previous year, the number of motor vehicles increased by 7.4% to 33.6 million. During the same period, total accidents rose by 7.3%, fatal and injury-related crashes by 8.0%, material damage accidents by 7.1%, and injuries by 4.9%. However, total deaths decreased by 5%.
The number of traffic deaths per 100,000 vehicles also declined from 20.3 in 2024 to 18.0 in 2025.
Regional distribution
At the provincial level, the highest number of deaths was recorded in Ankara with 290 fatalities, while Istanbul recorded the highest number of injuries at 47,717. The lowest figures for both deaths and injuries were reported in Ardahan.
Breakdown of victims
Of those killed in traffic accidents, 50.7% were drivers, 29.3% were passengers, and 20% were pedestrians. Among the injured, 55.6% were drivers, 33.9% passengers, and 10.5% pedestrians.
In terms of gender, 77.8% of fatalities were male and 22.2% female, while 70% of those injured were male and 30% female.
Motorcyclists and vulnerable road users
The report highlighted that 1,334 motorcycle riders and 191 motorcycle passengers lost their lives in 2025. In passenger cars, 1,002 drivers and 1,063 passengers were killed.
A total of 2,680 deaths occurred among vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and e-scooter users, accounting for 44.4% of all fatalities.
Accident patterns and causes
Half of all fatalities (50.1%) occurred in single-vehicle crashes, while 43% occurred in two-vehicle collisions and 6.9% in multi-vehicle accidents. Injuries were most common in two-vehicle crashes, accounting for 55% of cases.
Investigations found that 90.6% of accidents were caused by driver-related errors, with the most common factor being failure to adjust speed according to road, weather, and traffic conditions. Failure to yield and rear-end collisions followed.
Seasonal and weekly distribution
Fatal and injury-related accidents were most frequent in August (10.4%) and least frequent in February (5.7%). By weekday, accidents peaked on Fridays and were lowest on Sundays. Around 65% of accidents occurred during daytime hours.
Most deadly accident type
The highest number of fatalities occurred in pedestrian collision incidents (1,190 deaths), followed by run-off-road accidents (1,171 deaths) and side-impact collisions (1,124 deaths).(ILKHA)
