Türkiye welcomes UN decision to lift arms embargo on Somalia

Türkiye's foreign ministry issued a press release on Sunday, expressing its support for the United Nations Security Council's decision to lift the arms embargo on Somalia, which has been in place since 1992.
The ministry said the decision was a historic one that would pave the way for peace, prosperity and a hopeful future for Somalia, which has been struggling with civil war, terrorism and poverty for decades.
The ministry also reaffirmed Türkiye's commitment to stand by the Somali people and government in this new era, and to continue its humanitarian and development assistance to the African country.
Türkiye has been one of the main allies of Somalia, providing political, economic and military support to the Somali Federal Government, which was established in 2012 after a long transitional period.
Türkiye has also built the largest overseas military base in Somalia, where it trains Somali soldiers and security forces. In addition, Türkiye has invested in various sectors in Somalia, such as health, education, infrastructure and energy.
The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution on Friday, ending the arms embargo on Somalia and allowing the Somali government to acquire weapons and equipment for its security forces, subject to certain conditions and reporting requirements.
The resolution was welcomed by the Somali government and the African Union, which said it was a recognition of the progress made by Somalia in restoring peace and stability, and a sign of trust and confidence in the Somali authorities. (ILKHA)
