OpenAI has announced the release of a new version of ChatGPT Images, powered by its latest flagship image generation model, bringing faster performance and more precise image editing capabilities to users.

In a statement released on Wednesday, OpenAI said the updated Images model allows users to create images from scratch or edit existing photos with greater accuracy, producing results that closely match user intent while preserving key details such as lighting, composition, and personal features. According to the company, the new model generates images up to four times faster than previous versions.

Alongside the upgraded model, OpenAI is introducing a new Images feature within ChatGPT, designed to make image generation more intuitive and engaging. The feature aims to encourage creativity, spark inspiration, and simplify visual exploration for users across a wide range of applications.

OpenAI said the new Images model is rolling out globally in ChatGPT starting today for all users and is also available through the company’s application programming interface (API) as GPT Image 1.5. The enhanced Images experience within ChatGPT is also being made available to most users, with access for Business and Enterprise customers expected at a later stage.

The company emphasized that the updated model significantly improves image editing, particularly when users request changes to uploaded photos. The system now adheres more reliably to instructions, making only the specified modifications while maintaining consistency across multiple edits.

According to OpenAI, the model supports a wide range of editing functions, including adding, removing, combining, blending, and transposing elements within an image. These capabilities enable more realistic clothing and hairstyle try-ons, refined stylistic filters, and conceptual transformations that retain the essence of the original image.

“With these improvements, ChatGPT can function as a creative studio in your pocket,” OpenAI said, noting that the new tools are designed to support both practical photo editing and more expressive, artistic reimaginings.
