100 vehicles pile up in Michigan crash as snowstorm moves across United States
Nearly 100 vehicles were involved in a large-scale chain-reaction crash in the US state of Michigan after heavy snowfall and extreme icy conditions turned highways into danger zones, leaving many people injured.
According to Michigan State Police, the accident occurred as a powerful winter storm swept across the region, drastically reducing visibility and causing roads to freeze within a short period of time. Dozens of passenger cars and a significant number of semi-trailer trucks lost control, colliding with one another and sliding off the roadway.
Authorities confirmed that between 30 and 40 heavy-duty trucks were among the vehicles involved, compounding the scale of the crash and complicating rescue and clearance efforts. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene as reports of injuries continued to emerge, though officials have not released an exact number of those hurt.
Witnesses described chaotic scenes as vehicles skidded uncontrollably due to severe black ice, while whiteout conditions caused by blowing snow made it nearly impossible for drivers to react in time. Several sections of the affected highway were temporarily closed to traffic to allow emergency crews to reach the injured and remove wrecked vehicles.
State officials warned that the winter storm remains active across northern Michigan, with temperatures expected to plunge as low as minus 22 degrees Celsius due to strong winds. Drivers were urged to avoid unnecessary travel and strictly follow safety advisories, as conditions are expected to remain hazardous.
Road maintenance teams continue to work to clear snow and ice, while authorities have launched an investigation to assess the full impact of the incident and determine whether additional safety measures will be implemented amid the ongoing winter weather.(ILKHA)
