12 people shot near Florida university stadium
Twelve people, including six juveniles, were injured in a shooting near Florida A&M University's stadium in Tallahassee, Florida, on Saturday night, police said. Eleven of the victims suffered gunshot wounds.
The shooting occurred shortly before 8 p.m. near the intersection of Perry and Manatee streets, close to Bragg Memorial Stadium, during the university's homecoming weekend, according to the Tallahassee Police Department.
At least three of those shot sustained serious injuries, including one person who was in critical condition, while the other eight were reported to be in stable condition, police said. The youngest shooting victim was 11 years old.
The 12th victim, the grandmother of one of those shot, was injured while fleeing the scene, local media reported.
Police Chief Lawrence Revell said preliminary findings indicated that a physical altercation preceded the shooting. Investigators believe the incident involved two or three individuals, but authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or established a motive.
No arrests had been made as of Sunday morning, and police said the investigation remained ongoing. The department's Violent Crimes Unit is investigating the incident, which authorities have described as potentially isolated.
Officers helped carry victims to safety and transport them to hospitals before the scene was fully secured, Revell said, expressing concern over the number of children injured.
The shooting followed a homecoming football game at Bragg Memorial Stadium, where the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions defeated the Florida A&M Rattlers 31-28. Authorities have not confirmed whether the shooting was connected to the game.
Florida A&M said the incident occurred near its campus and urged people to avoid the area while police investigated. The university said its campus remained safe and that the safety of students, faculty and staff was its highest priority.
Police urged anyone with information about the shooting to contact investigators.
The investigation was continuing, and authorities said the preliminary details could change as detectives gathered evidence and interviewed witnesses. (ILKHA)
