US advisers see Netanyahu’s departure as potential boost to Trump’s regional agenda
Senior advisers to US President Donald Trump believe an Israeli government without Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could be more receptive to Washington’s regional agenda, according to an Axios report published Saturday.
The report said dissatisfaction with Netanyahu has intensified over the past six months, particularly following the war with Iran and growing disagreements over the Trump administration’s approach to the Middle East.
Vance emerges as leading critic
US Vice President JD Vance has become one of the most prominent internal critics of Netanyahu, privately expressing concerns that the Israeli prime minister’s assessments before the war with Iran had been fundamentally flawed, according to Axios.
Asked about Tuesday’s Israeli election, Vance declined to endorse Netanyahu, stressing instead that Trump’s position was the one that mattered.
Disagreements span Gaza, Syria and Lebanon
Senior US officials have raised concerns over Israeli policies in Gaza, Syria, Lebanon and the occupied West Bank, with particular frustration over Netanyahu’s reluctance to advance Trump’s proposed Gaza peace plan.
US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have reportedly expressed frustration over delays in implementing the proposal. Meanwhile, envoy Tom Barrack has raised concerns about Israeli military operations in Syria.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s team also believes Israel could do more to strengthen the Lebanese government, according to the report.
New Israeli government seen as potential opportunity
Some Trump advisers believe a new Israeli government without Netanyahu’s far-right coalition partners could give Washington greater diplomatic flexibility across the region.
Despite the reported internal tensions, Trump publicly endorsed Netanyahu on Sunday, warning that the Israeli leader’s defeat could have consequences for US-Israeli relations as Israelis prepare to vote on Tuesday.
The report highlights growing differences between Washington and Netanyahu’s government over regional priorities, even as Trump continues to express public support for the Israeli prime minister. (ILKHA)
