5.0-magnitude earthquake shakes Semnan province, Iran

A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck Semnan province in Iran on Thursday morning, according to the Iranian Seismological Center.
The quake hit at 08:53 local time, with its epicenter located at 35.25°N latitude and 57.19°E longitude, at a shallow depth of 9 kilometers.
The shallow focus amplified the tremor’s effects, causing brief but intense shaking felt across nearby communities. Residents in Zaman Abad reported a startling experience, with one local stating, “The ground moved beneath my feet, and the walls swayed. It was over quickly but left us shaken.”
No casualties or major structural damage have been reported so far. Local authorities have deployed emergency services to assess potential impacts on infrastructure and ensure public safety. The Iranian Seismological Center is actively monitoring the region for aftershocks and has urged residents to follow earthquake safety protocols, such as seeking cover under sturdy furniture and avoiding windows.
This quake comes amid a series of minor tremors in the region over the past month. Officials are calling for heightened preparedness in Iran’s seismically active zones, emphasizing the need for robust building standards, updated emergency plans, and increased community awareness to mitigate future risks.
