5.7-magnitude earthquake strikes off eastern Crete, no major damage reported
A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck the sea region off the eastern coast of Crete early Friday morning, shaking communities across the island but causing no immediate reports of major damage or injuries.
According to preliminary data, the tremor occurred at approximately 6:18 a.m. local time and was centered 11–28 kilometers southeast of Ierapetra. Due to its relatively shallow depth, the earthquake was widely felt, particularly in the regions of Lasithi and Heraklion.
Authorities quickly moved to assess the situation. Giannis Androulakis confirmed that communication had been established with local officials in Ierapetra, as the epicenter was located just south of the municipality.
“The earthquake was felt throughout Eastern Crete,” Androulakis said, adding that civil protection teams have been placed on high alert. “We are accustomed to seismic activity and rely on strong building standards, but inspections are being carried out, particularly in older residential areas.”
Seismologists reported a series of aftershocks following the initial quake, with magnitudes recorded at 3.8, 3.6, 3.5, and 3.2. Monitoring efforts are ongoing as experts track seismic activity in the region.
The timing of the earthquake, which struck as many residents were beginning their day, contributed to its widespread impact in terms of public awareness. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and to follow updates from official sources as assessments continue. (ILKHA)
