6.2-magnitude earthquake jolts eastern Indonesia, no tsunami warning issued
A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia's eastern province of North Maluku on Friday, authorities said, with no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at 11:31 a.m. local time (0231 GMT). Its epicenter was located about 58 kilometers (36 miles) west of Tobelo at a depth of 120.9 kilometers, indicating a relatively deep earthquake.
Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the tremor did not generate a tsunami threat and urged residents to rely only on official updates.
The earthquake was felt in several parts of North Maluku, prompting some residents to briefly leave buildings as a precaution. Authorities have not reported any significant damage, and assessments are continuing.
Indonesia is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismically active zone where several tectonic plates converge. Strong earthquakes are common across the archipelago, although deep-focus quakes such as Friday's are generally less likely to cause widespread destruction than shallow ones. (ILKHA)
