Afghanistan expresses disapproval of UNSC resolution on special envoy

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has expressed dissatisfaction with the adoption of Resolution 2721 by the United Nations Security Council.
The resolution calls for the appointment of a Special Envoy for Afghanistan by the UN Secretary-General, despite disagreements among the council's permanent members.
Notably, the resolution was passed without consulting the Afghan government, which had requested more time, discussion, and clarification on the evaluation of the special coordinator by two permanent members.
Afghanistan contends that the appointment of an additional representative is unnecessary as the country is not in a state of war and is governed by a central authority capable of protecting its interests, fulfilling obligations, and managing issues through bilateral and multilateral channels.
The Afghan government emphasizes that historical instances of special envoys have not effectively resolved conflicts, often complicating situations by imposing foreign models. While welcoming positive efforts from the United Nations for stronger engagement with Afghanistan, the nation asserts that its approach will align with religious beliefs, cultural values, and national interests.
The statement calls on the United Nations to consider ground realities when making decisions about Afghanistan and not be swayed by any external influences. (ILKHA)
