Afghanistan, Uzbekistan sign $243 million deals to boost power infrastructure

Afghanistan and Uzbekistan have finalized contracts for four major projects aimed at strengthening Afghanistan’s electricity grid, valued at approximately $243 million, officials announced on Sunday.
The agreements were signed in Kabul by Dr. Abdul Bari Omar, CEO of Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat, alongside representatives from the Uzbek Ministry of Energy. The ceremony was attended by Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar Akhund, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, and Uzbek Energy Minister Jurabek Mirza Muhammadov.
The four projects are poised to significantly enhance Afghanistan’s electricity transmission and distribution network, addressing long-standing energy shortages and improving grid reliability across the country. The initiatives include the 500 kV Sarkhan–Dasht-e-Awan Transmission Line, which will deliver up to 1,000 MW of power, and the development of the Arghandi Substation, with a capacity of 800 MW, both critical for stabilizing the national grid.
Additionally, the 220 kV Kabul–Sheikh Masri Transmission Line, capable of transmitting 800 MW, and the construction of the Sheikh Masri Substation in Nangarhar, with a capacity of 126 MW, will expand access to electricity for urban and rural communities alike. Collectively, these projects are expected to improve energy efficiency, reduce transmission losses, and strengthen regional cooperation, particularly through Afghanistan’s partnership with Uzbekistan, while supporting the country’s long-term economic development and energy security goals.
Officials stated that the projects are expected to be completed within 18 months, providing a major boost to Afghanistan’s power infrastructure and addressing long-standing energy shortages.
“This partnership represents a strategic step forward in enhancing Afghanistan’s electricity network and ensuring reliable power delivery to our communities,” Dr. Omar said during the signing ceremony.
The collaboration underscores deepening economic and infrastructural ties between Afghanistan and Uzbekistan, as both countries aim to strengthen regional connectivity and energy security. (ILKHA)
