ASEAN calls for concrete steps to halt violence in Myanmar
ASEAN foreign ministers have renewed calls for concrete measures to reduce violence in Myanmar, reaffirming the bloc's peace plan while urging inclusive political dialogue and expanded humanitarian assistance.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has called for concrete steps to reduce violence in Myanmar, stressing the need to advance efforts toward a peaceful resolution of the country's prolonged political crisis.
The appeal came during an informal meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers in Bangkok with Myanmar's Foreign Minister U Tin Maung Swe, marking the first face-to-face engagement between ASEAN and Myanmar's top diplomat since the military takeover in 2021.
Following the meeting, ASEAN reaffirmed its commitment to the Five-Point Consensus, describing it as the primary framework for restoring peace and stability in Myanmar.
The ministers urged all parties to work toward a sustained reduction in violence, promote inclusive political dialogue involving all stakeholders, and facilitate the safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance across the country.
They also reiterated support for ASEAN's Special Envoy to Myanmar and emphasized the importance of continued regional engagement to help advance the peace process.
The meeting also addressed the situation of detained former Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
ASEAN ministers sought assurances regarding Suu Kyi's health and well-being. Myanmar's foreign minister told the meeting that she was in good health and would continue to receive appropriate care.
Despite the renewed engagement, ASEAN acknowledged that significant challenges remain in implementing the Five-Point Consensus, as the conflict continues in several parts of Myanmar.
The bloc reaffirmed its commitment to supporting peace, stability, and humanitarian efforts while encouraging all parties to pursue dialogue for the benefit of the Myanmar people. (ILKHA)
