Canada will mark the official opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge on Friday with a scaled-back ceremony that excludes U.S. officials, following a dispute over toll-sharing arrangements and renewed trade tensions between the two neighboring countries.

Canadian authorities cancelled a previously planned cross-border ribbon-cutting event, opting instead for a domestic celebration attended only by Canadian representatives. The bridge, which connects Windsor, Ontario, with Detroit, Michigan, is scheduled to open to traffic on Monday.

The decision comes as relations between Ottawa and Washington remain strained over a series of trade and policy disagreements, including recent threats by U.S. President Donald Trump to impose tariffs of up to 50% on certain Canadian goods.

Officials said the revised opening ceremony reflects the current diplomatic climate and follows disagreements over the financial arrangements governing the bridge, particularly issues related to toll revenue sharing.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge is expected to become one of North America's most important trade corridors, providing a direct link between Canada and the United States while easing congestion at the nearby Ambassador Bridge, one of the busiest commercial border crossings on the continent.
