China confirms arrest of U.S.-linked Myanmar scholar on espionage charges
China’s Foreign Ministry has confirmed the arrest of U.S. citizen and Myanmar scholar U Min Zin, accusing him of espionage and endangering Chinese national security.
The detention, which occurred on June 3 at Kunming Changshui International Airport in Yunnan Province, was confirmed by ministry spokesperson Lin Jian during a regular press briefing on Friday.
Min Zin, executive director of the Institute for Strategy and Policy (ISP-Myanmar), a Thailand-based think tank that researches China’s role and influence in Myanmar, disappeared while attending a meeting in Kunming, a city bordering Myanmar. He was arrested upon arrival at the airport.
Background and Timing Raise QuestionsThe arrest is considered unusual, as detentions of U.S. citizens on national security charges remain relatively rare. It comes just weeks after U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to Beijing, where he held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping. It also precedes a planned visit to Beijing next week by Myanmar’s junta leader, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.
Min Zin, a U.S. citizen originally from Myanmar, has a long history in pro-democracy activism. He participated in the 1988 student-led uprising against military rule, after which he fled to Thailand. He later studied in the United States and returned to Myanmar in 2010. He currently splits his time between Thailand, the U.S., and Myanmar.
He is also a PhD student in political science at the University of California, Berkeley, and his research focuses on Myanmar politics and China-Myanmar relations.
Family and Diplomatic ResponseSources close to the family told media outlets they are concerned about his well-being and have been in contact with the U.S. Consulate General in Guangzhou. Chinese authorities have stated that the U.S. side has been formally notified of the detention.
Min Zin had been scheduled to speak at a conference in Kathmandu later this month.
No further details about the specific allegations against him have been released by Chinese authorities.
The case is likely to add tension to already complex U.S.-China relations, particularly regarding academic exchanges and research on sensitive regional issues. (ILKHA)
