Death toll rises to 11 as heavy rains devastate Madagascar

The death toll from the heavy rains that have battered Madagascar since February 14 has risen to 11, according to the latest report from the National Office for Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC) released on Thursday.
Five regions of the island nation have been severely affected, including the capital, Antananarivo, and its surrounding areas. Of the 11 reported fatalities, seven occurred in and around Antananarivo, while four were in the southeastern part of the country.
The torrential rains and subsequent floods have impacted more than 16,000 people (4,260 households), mainly in the central highlands and southeastern regions. As a result, more than 9,000 people have been forced to relocate to temporary shelters.
The BNGRC reported that at least 3,000 houses were flooded, with 13 completely destroyed. In response to the crisis, authorities suspended classes in the Antananarivo region on Monday, with closures set to continue through the week.
With forecasts indicating the potential for further heavy rains, local authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions in the coming days. Relief efforts are ongoing as officials work to assist affected communities and prevent further casualties. (ILKHA)
