Death toll surges to 3,354 in Myanmar after 7.7-magnitude quake

The human toll of last month’s devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar and Thailand continues to rise, with Myanmar’s state media reporting a revised death toll of 3,354 as of Saturday.
According to MRTV, the state broadcaster, an additional 4,850 people have been injured in Myanmar, while 220 remain unaccounted for. The earthquake, which struck on March 28, has left a trail of destruction across both countries, sparking large-scale rescue and recovery efforts.
In neighboring Thailand, officials confirmed at least 23 fatalities in the capital Bangkok. City authorities say that 15 of those deaths occurred when a high-rise building under construction collapsed during the quake. Dozens remain missing, and search operations are ongoing.
In Myanmar’s city of Mandalay, rescue crews continue to clear rubble at the site of collapsed buildings, including with the use of heavy machinery. A rescue worker was seen navigating the debris on Friday, as the grim task of recovering bodies and searching for survivors presses on.
International support has begun to arrive. China and Russia have dispatched specialized rescue and disaster-response teams to assist Myanmar in the aftermath of the quake.
Authorities in both countries stress that the death toll could still rise as search-and-rescue teams work around the clock in affected areas. (ILKHA)
