Diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Syria resume after over a decade of tensions
State media sources have reported that Saudi Arabia and Syria have reestablished diplomatic missions in each other's countries.
This move comes more than ten years after Saudi Arabia severed ties with Syria due to the Syrian government's handling of the civil war, which was deemed as brutal.
“Based on the fraternal ties that unite the peoples of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Syrian Arab Republic, in the interest of contributing to the development of joint Arab action and strengthening security and stability in the region, and taking into account the resolution issued by the ministerial meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Arab States Council, which was held in Cairo on May 7th 2023, that stipulates the resumption of the participation of the Syrian Arab Republic's delegations in the meetings of the Arab League Council and all its affiliated organizations and agencies, along with its commitment to the principles of the Charters of the United Nations and the Arab League as well as international conventions and norms, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has decided to resume the work of its diplomatic mission in the Syrian Arab Republic,” Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The announcement coincided with Syria's recent readmission into the Arab League, despite objections from the United States, which holds the Syrian regime responsible for the deaths of over 300,000 civilians and the displacement of millions during the civil war.
In a reciprocal gesture, Damascus also confirmed its decision to resume its diplomatic mission in Saudi Arabia, as stated by the Syrian state media outlet, SANA.
“Based on the deep ties and common belonging of the two peoples of the Syrian Arab Republic and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and as an embodiment of the aspirations of the two peoples, and as Syria believes in the importance of boosting bilateral relations among Arab countries in the interest of the Arab joint action, The Syrian Arab Republic decided to resume the work of its diplomatic mission in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” Syrian Foreign Ministry said.
