Explosion at Mosque in Indonesia injures 54 worshippers during Friday prayers
At least 54 people were injured after an explosion ripped through a mosque located within a school complex in Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, during Friday prayers, local authorities confirmed.
According to police officials, the blast occurred at the mosque inside the Kelapa Gading area in North Jakarta, where dozens of worshippers had gathered for the weekly congregational prayer.
Jakarta Police Chief Asep Edi Suheri said investigations are underway to determine the cause of the explosion. “We are still assessing whether it was an accident or a deliberate act,” Suheri told reporters during a televised briefing.
Medical sources said that the victims suffered varying degrees of injuries, including burns and fractures. Emergency teams rushed the wounded to nearby hospitals, while police cordoned off the area as a precaution.
Footage broadcast by KompasTV and MetroTV showed ambulances and emergency personnel surrounding the site. Despite the blast, initial images from the mosque revealed limited visible structural damage.
Indonesia’s state news agency Antara reported that Deputy Security Minister Lodewijk Freidrich confirmed that two consecutive explosions were heard during the incident. The complex, located on navy-owned land, houses numerous military personnel and retired officers.
Authorities have yet to confirm whether the explosion was caused by a gas leak, an electrical fault, or a possible explosive device. No group has claimed responsibility, and officials urged the public to remain calm while investigations continue.
Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation, has witnessed isolated incidents involving explosions in religious and public spaces in recent years, though large-scale attacks have become rare.
Police said further details will be released following forensic examination of the site.(ILKHA)
