Fire destroys shops at major market in Nigeria's Ibadan
A fire swept through Bode Market in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, in the early hours of Friday, destroying numerous shops and goods worth millions of naira before firefighters brought the blaze under control, local media reported.
The blaze spread rapidly through several sections of one of Ibadan's busiest commercial markets, leaving many traders with heavy losses.
Authorities said there were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries.
Firefighters from the Oyo State Fire Service contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the market. Emergency crews reportedly faced difficulties accessing some areas due to the market's congested layout and closely packed shops.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.
Bode Market is one of Ibadan's largest trading hubs and is particularly known for the sale of medicinal herbs, animal skins and a wide range of traditional products. (ILKHA)
